Cauliflower Rules!

February 26, 2015

Yesterday I ate an entire cauliflower by myself— and I’m not even kidding

At first I felt glutenous. I mean, who does that?  I blamed my indulgence on shrinkage (those flowerettes shrivel to nothing when you stick them in the oven for 40 minutes) but I then I realised I was only making excuses. I ate it all because I wanted to. It tasted good, so I ate it.

To HELL with the cauliflower police!

Even so, my lingering doubts and insecurities  made me check with my friend Google. She usually gives good advice. AND GUESS WHAT??  She tells me to totally have another.

Turns out AN ENTIRE HEAD OF CAULIFLOWER HAS 190 CALORIES! And I won’t even bore you with all of the protein and vitamins and everything else that’s in there.

Cauliflower completely rocks!

What else could I eat for 190 calories that would be anywhere near as satisfying? That led me once again to Madame Google.

But this time she had her goody-two-shoes hat on and suggested a whole host of really boring under 200 calorie things like a half of an apple and a tablespoon of peanut butter, or a half cup of cottage cheese with fresh fruit. Blah!

After a few more tries pumping in phrases like “10 two-hundred calorie foods you actually want to eat ” or “the most orgasmic 200 calorie EVER,” I discovered a few interesting tidbits.

First of all, a Kentucy Fried Chicken (that’s right people KFC!!!)  drumstick has only 120 calories. Who knew? Think about that.

Based on a reasonable 1600 calorie a day diet, you could have 3 tastey heads of cauliflower (600 calories + 200 for the olive oil you need to douse it with—say 800, completely fibrous calories) and then you’d STILL have 800 calories left over for KFC!  What’s that?  6.5 legs!! That’s a lot of chicken.

Now,  I’m ignoring your social responsibility to free KFC’s poor tortured birds, as well as any possible implications on your gallbladder,  but the point here is that when you’re eating 3 healthy heads of cauliflower everyday, it opens up a world of possibility for the other available calories. All of the cauliflower goodness will counteract all of the badness of the really decadent delights you can add on.

Consider the combinations:

3 cauliflowers + 6.5 KFC chicken legs

3 cauliflowers + 1 bottle of white wine (605 calories) + 1.5 chicken legs

3 cauliflowers + 1/2 bottle of white wine (300 calories )+ 1 chicken leg + 1 white chocolate milky bar (137 calories) + something else really good

So take the cauliflower challenge and come up with your own perfect cauli—combo and live guilt free.
